Cherry Stella The first self-fertile sweet cherry, bred in Canada in the 1960s, Cherry Stella is a very good choice where there is only room for one cherry tree. The fruit is large, deep red and glossy, with deep red flesh and a very good, sweet flavour. Vigorous tree, upright at first, spreading later; heavy, reliable cropper. Can be trained against a warm wall, to make protecting the fruit from birds easier. Prune as little as possible, and only in summer. Self-fertile, and a good pollinator; may crop better if a different variety of cherry is grown nearby. Thin fruit if the crop is heavy, or the fruits may be small and the flavour less rich. Fruit sometimes splits in wet weather. Has the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
