Loganberry LY59
A hybrid between a raspberry and a blackberry, Loganberries were developed in California in the late 19th century, but are well adapted to Irish conditions. Cane fruits, fruiting on 2nd year wood, they must be trained on wires like summer raspberries. The variety LY59 is easy to grow and particularly good for cooking and jam-making. The plant is moderately vigorous with thorny, arching canes, and will produce for about 15 years. The fruit is longer, darker and juicier than a raspberry, tart, deep purple when ripe, and produced for several weeks in August and September. For best flavour, pick loganberries when fully ripe.
