4 Week Wednesday Mornings Course: Clay Serving Dishes and Platters May 4, 11, 18, 25 About the Course Everybody loves a great serving dish to complement their food, and this course gives you the opportunity to design and hand-make your very own platter, through a series of three decorating techniques workshops over four two-hour sessions. At the first workshop you will form the piece you want to work on and each workshop thereafter will be a focus on one technique before moving on to another the following week. You can layer all 3 techniques into one piece or work each separately picking two pieces to fire at the end of the course. You will make your own stamp to leave your imprint on this and future works you might like to make.   After your course you will have knowledge and ability to: Slab Roll - Using our slab roller you will make the form(s) from stoneware clay for the platter(s) which you will work on throughout the course. Stamp - You will carve your own stamp from clay at this workshop, creating your own potter’s stamp, which you will use to mark your own work, creating pattern and texture. Slip decoration - Slip is a coloured or uncoloured liquified clay which can be treated like paint to decorate clay pieces. You will be taught how to use slip, opening up methods of decoration beyond traditional glazing. Slip can be used to create broad abstract textured images or flat precise detailed work. Sgraffitto - You will be taught how to use the sgraffitto method of decoration, which is technically a form of slip decoration. Contrasting colours of slip are layered onto your unfired clay. Your design or pattern is then scratched or carved into the dried slip to reveal the different colours beneath. TIME: 10.00 - 12.00 When: May 4, 11, 18, 25 WHERE: 1 Little Green Street, Dublin 7  COST: €250 If you would like to give this Workshop as a gift please look at our Gift Cards options here. FAQs Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher or time to make some new pieces. Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. Please let us know in advance.  What are my transport/parking options getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five minute walk away) and many bus routes service Stop 1479 on Ormond Quay, at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited, but there is pay and display in the general area, and there are large car parks nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets. What does the course entail? You will be welcomed by your teacher and brought to your classroom. Each participant will have access to their own pottery tools for the duration of the workshop. We supply all the materials you need. Each workshop ends with a class and equipment tidy up - another important part of the potter's training!  What should I wear/bring? Please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron, or you can purchase an Arran Street East apron here. Should I wear a mask?  As per the government's regulations masks are not mandatory during the workshop.  Are there any Health and Safety issues?  Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.  When will my pots be available for collection? We will ask you to select your favourite 2 pieces that you made throughout the course, and we will fire them for you, and contact you when they are ready for collection - usually within a few weeks after the class, or you can glaze them yourself at one of our Glazing Workshops. You will make a few different little pots during the day, which you are welcome to bring home to airdry if you like. Please bring your own wrapping (bubble wrap, tissue paper, small carboard box, etc) if you would like to do this. Please note these pieces can be used for display only and are not watertight. You can recycle the clay in these pieces if you want to make something else or use our At Home Clay Kit if you would like to learn some handbuilding techniques.
