Flowering Cherry Spire
A good choice for the smaller garden or as a street tree, Prunus Spire is a small to medium-sized, fairly fast-growing, deciduous tree with a narrow, columnar habit when young, later fanning out a little at the crown to a vase shape. The long, elliptical leaves emerge reddish-bronze, turning yellow-green and then green in summer and orange and red in autumn. A froth of single, soft pink flowers, with a red eye and red calyxes, emerge from red buds from late March, at the same time as the leaves. The flowers are excellent for pollinators. A deservedly popular ornamental tree, Prunus Spire holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
