Tasmanian Yellow Gum
From mountainous areas in Tasmania, the coolest part of Australia, Eucalyptus johnstonii is a tall, very fast-growing, evergreen tree with an upright, open habit, which does very well in Ireland, particularly in wetter areas. The bark is beautiful, in shades of milk chocolate and caramel with lime-green streaks, and peels attractively in long strips. The highly aromatic, glossy green foliage is round to oval when young, becoming lance-shaped as the tree ages, and is good for flower-arranging. The unobtrusive white flowers are attractive to bees. Tasmania yellow gum makes an attractive specimen tree and can also be used for a shelter belt; it’s visually comfortable in the rural landscape. It can be cut back by frost, but will regenerate from the base.
