Avens Alabama Slammer A new hybrid avens cultivar, Geum Alabama Slammer is a fast-growing, semi-evergreen, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial, ideal for the front of a border. Glossy, light green, round leaves form a low mound, from which rise slender, branching burgundy flower-stems. The flowers are semi-double, ruffled, and a golden orange, shaded in red, and appear as dots of colour floating above the leaves; they appear in late spring and early summer. Cut back after flowering for fresh leaves and more flowers. Avens Alabama Slammer spreads slowly by rhizomes, and should be divided every two to three years, to keep the plant from becoming woody and bare in the centre. Lovely with low, bronze grasses or dark tulips, it’s an easy, slug-resistant, trouble-free plant.
