Quince Serbian Gold
A highly ornamental fruit tree for all seasons, Cydonia oblonga Serbian Gold is a Balkan quince cultivar particularly suitable for our climate. It’s a vigorous tip-bearing tree with a gnarled and twiggy habit, attractive bark and good autumn colour. Very good disease resistance, and a regular, heavy cropper. Beautiful pale pink blossom is borne in spring and followed by huge, golden, apple-shaped quinces with a lovely aromatic scent. Pick in late September and store for a couple of months to ripen, then use the wonderfully scented, rich fruit as a purée, in apple pies, in jams and for membrillo (quince jelly to eat with cheese) – or just leave on a shelf to scent the room. Although one of the hardiest and wind-resistant quinces, Serbian Gold may not fruit in the coldest areas, and will do best planted in a warm, sheltered site.
