Grape Hyacinth Golden Fragrance
An unusually coloured grape hyacinth with a lovely fragrance, Muscari macrocarpum Golden Fragrance is a small, fast-growing, deciduous, bulbous perennial with an upright habit. The grey-green leaves are quite narrow, disappearing in summer as the bulb goes dormant. The long-lasting, gardenia-scented flowers emerge in April and into May, at first dusky purple; they then turn greenish-lilac before turning gold, often with dusky purple tops to the spike. Plant in naturalistic groups; it naturalises well, and can make a good under-planting for hyacinths or tulips of suitable colour. The good news is, it is not as invasive as other grape hyacinths! Grape hyacinth Golden Fragrance is also good in low containers, in soil-based compost two-to-one with sharp grit.
