Sir Charles Leonard Woolley (1880 – 1960) was a British archaeologist best known for his excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia. He is recognized as one of the first ‘modern’ archaeologists who excavated in a methodical way, keeping careful records, and using them to reconstruct ancient life and history. Published posthumously in 1962, As I Seem to Remember is a collection of delightful and informative anecdotes from Woolley’s years as an archaeologist. In it he describes the various discoveries he made, as well as his dealings with unscrupulous antique dealers and the recovery of stolen antiquities.      There is also an account of his experiences working for British intelligence in Port Said during World War I, and the time he spent as a prison of war in Ottoman Turkey after he was captured in 1916.
