Sonnets of Europe: A Volume of Translations, Selected and Arranged with Notes by Samuel Waddinton

“Eastward, the sun arises clad in gold, Westward, the waning moonbeam disappears ...”– Mickiewicz (translated from Polish)
This is a collection of sonnets in translation, collected in a single volume and made available to the English-speaking public. The translations were mostly contemporary, and some of the sonnets were appearing in English for the first time.
While many of the poems are from well-known European writers from Renaissance times, or earlier, like Dante, Michelangelo or Petrarch, to Samuel Waddington they are “as fresh as flowers newly gathered and possessed of a grace and delicate fragrance that have outlived the passing of so many centuries”.
Italian sonnets dominate, but there are also works by French, German and Spanish poets, as well as some translated from more unexpected sources such as Swedish or Polish.
Published by Walter Scott, London, circa 1920.
