Katherine Everett, née Herbert (1872 – 1954) was born at Cahernane House in Killarney. Her father’s family owned the Muckross estate. Her childhood was not a happy one, and as a teenager she moved to England to live with an aunt. Later, when her husband left her alone with two children, Katherine turned to designing and renovating houses and gardens to make a living. She spent much of her life in England but also lived in British Columbia and Italy. She was in Dublin during the Civil War and witnessed the upheavals of that time. Included in her memoirs are descriptions of  the many famous people she knew during her life, including Oscar Wilde, George Moore, William Orpen, Augustus John, Rodin and Mrs Pankhurst.    Published by Constable in 1949.
