White forsythia
A lax, deciduous shrub with forsythia-like, pinkish-white, almond-scented flowers appearing from purplish buds on the bare branches in early spring. These are followed by glossy green oval leaves, which often turn wine-purple in autumn. Branches can be brought indoors in late winter for forcing in vases; they will fill the room with scent. After flowering, thin out some of the older shoots to a strong side-shoot to encourage new growth; once established, regularly prune the oldest wood back to the base, and mulch to stop the soil drying out.
Site: Fairly sheltered; in colder areas these should be planted in front of a warm wallPosition: Full sun to partial shadeSoil: Fertile, well-drained soil; dislikes droughtSeasons of interest: Early Spring; AutumnHardiness: HardyHeight: 3-5ft (1-1.5m) Spread: 5-8ft (1.5–2.5m)
