Ironwood Persian Spire
Ironwoods are famous for their brilliant autumn colour. Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire'® differs from most in its narrow, upright form and smaller size, ideal for the smaller garden – it can even be grown in a large container, which will keep it small. A small, columnar tree or large shrub, of average vigour, it gives year-round interest. The leaves, narrower than the species, emerge a rich purple, and turn dark green edged with purple in summer, before turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. After leaf-fall the attractive, exfoliating gray and fawn bark is revealed, then in late winter and early spring tiny red flowers appear on the bare branches. It needs acid soil for the best autumn colour. Very cold-tolerant, healthy and easy to grow.
