Portugal Laurel Grown as a Tree A large evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green glossy foliage and reddish stems. If left to grow, Prunus lusitanica makes a very interesting evergreen tree with sprays of small, slightly fragrant, white flowers in spring followed by small red fruits turning to dark purple but it is most often planted as an excellent evergreen hedge.
