"Apple Charles Ross
A cross between the famous apples Cox’s Orange Pippin and Peasgood Nonsuch, Apple Charles Ross is a good dual-purpose apple, dating back to the late 19th century. The fruit is large and handsome, orange-red, with a sweet, Cox-like taste when eaten fresh, although this fades on keeping. Also cooks well, especially in open tarts, as the slices retain their shape. Apple Charles Ross is of average vigour, a spur-bearer, and a reliable cropper. Good, easy-to-grow, garden apple, and a good choice for alkaline soil, as it is more tolerant of lime than other apples. Good disease-resistance, excellent resistance to scab. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
