Cider Gum Probably the best known hardy eucalypt in Ireland, Eucalyptus gunnii is a large, very fast-growing evergreen tree with an upright, open habit.  Attractively peeling, thin grey bark drops away to reveal yellowish-brown patches which weather beautifully to pinkish- or greenish-grey. The juvenile leaves are almost round and a bright blue-green, and are much loved by flower-arrangers; leaves on older wood are willow-like, longer and deep grey-green, but if the plant is pruned to keep it shrub-sized, the beautiful juvenile foliage is retained. Small, starry white flowers appear in midsummer. Cider gum got its name from the alcoholic drink derived from its fermented sap. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
