Great Lives contains four profiles of prominent Britons:
Ifor Evans (1899 – 1982) was an academic and university administrator; he writes about the poet, John Keats.
Historian Maurice Ashley (1907 – 1994) contributes the chapter on General John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, the victor of the Battle of Blenheim (1704).
Charles Williams (1886 – 1945) was a British poet, novelist, theologian and member of the Inklings group with C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien at the University of Oxford. He looks at the life and character of Queen Elizabeth.
Sir Christopher Wren, who designed St Paul’s Cathedral in the late 17th century, is the subject for art historian, Geoffrey Webb (1898– 1970).
Published by the Readers Union in 1941.
