In Two Years Ago, published in 1857, Charles Kingsley looks back at the Crimean War and the cholera outbreak of 1853-54. Set in his beloved North Devon, and full of carefully observed descriptions, the story makes clear how poor sanitary conditions and public apathy are to be blamed for the outbreak of cholera. Charles Kingsley (1819 – 1875) was a clergyman in the Church of England, and an active social reformer, associated with the Christian Socialism movement.  He was also a historian, novelist and poet.
