Ornamental Crabapple Golden Hornet A long established, popular Crabapple, Malus x zumi Golden Hornet is a vigorous, medium-sized, deciduous tree, which is grown for its attractive blossom and heavy crops of edible, golden fruit. The shape is broad and rounded, making for a good specimen tree. The flowers open white, sometimes flushed pink, from bright pink buds, appearing for a very long period in April and May. Heavy crops of small, honey-yellow fruit can be used for making a golden apple jelly or left to hang on the tree into winter, until they soften enough for the birds eat from the tree. The tree is self-fertile, and is an excellent pollinator for apple trees in Flowering Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6. Can be susceptible to scab, so not advised for wetter areas. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
