Stone Pine
A medium sized, stately evergreen pine tree, Pinus pinea originates from the Mediterranean region where it has been cultivated for centuries due to the nutritious seeds produced by their large cones, now known as pine nuts. The dark green needle-like leaves are held in pairs. As the Stone Pine matures, the crown becomes wide spreading and forms almost an umbrella-like form. The bark on old trees have deep fissures with orange-red tones. The stone pine makes an excellent specimen tree where space permits.Site: Tolerates coastal exposureSoil: Well drained, will tolerate acid to alkaline and sandy soilsPosition: Full sunSeason of Interest: Evergreen, large cones, edible seeds, interesting barkHardiness: Fully hardyHeight: 50-60ft (15-20m ) Spread: 15-25ft (4.5-7.5m)
