Pheasant bush
Native to China and Tibet, Leycesteria formosa is a vigorous, medium-sized to large, deciduous shrub with a bushy habit, grown for its good looks, long season of interest and importance for pollinators and other wild-life. The mid-green, pointed leaves are borne on upright, grey-green stems. From mid- to late summer, 4 inch-long tassels of white flowers almost hidden by showy, wine-coloured bracts cover the plant. These are followed by scented, deep purple berries, much loved by birds. Be aware that the plant can become invasive, as birds can spread seed from the berries into walls, paths and other plantings. Also known as Himalayan honeysuckle, pheasant bush is easy to grow, and can be pruned back hard to keep it within bounds.
