Crimson Bottlebrush Splendens
A reliable and popular cultivar of the native Australian species, Callistemon citrinus Splendens is a medium-sized, lax, evergreen shrub, with an arching habit. Dark green, aromatic leaves clothe the branches, scented of lemon when brushed against. Brilliant crimson, cylindrical flower spikes, like old-fashioned bottle-brushes, grow at the tips of the branches. Only for the mildest areas, as it can be killed by hard or unexpected frosts, and best against a warm wall; it can also be grown in a pot, to be brought in for the winter. Crimson bottlebrush Splendens holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
