Trachelospermum jasminoides
Originally from the Far East, Trachelospermum jasminoides is also known as Confederate Jasmine, as it grows well in the southern states of the US – you also see it everywhere in Rome. It’s a vigorous, medium-sized, evergreen climber, which climbs by twining round a support. Oval, glossy, deep-green leaves turn bronze-red in winter. Richly scented, very pretty jasmine-like white flowers, aging to cream, are borne from June to August. Frost-hardy, so only for the mildest areas, where it will do better against a warm wall; also good in a pot in a conservatory. Star Jasmine holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
