Quercus stellata - Post Oak
Also known as the iron oak for its durable, water- and fire-resistant timber, Quercus stellata is a slow-growing, medium-sized to tall, deciduous tree with a dense, rounded crown. The rough, leathery, leaves are dark green with rounded lobes, turning yellowish-brown in autumn. The male and female catkins are unobtrusive and yellowish; the female catkins are followed by oval acorns with very short stems and small cups. The post oak grows tallest in heavy, moist soils, but will also thrive on dry, gravelly soils and on slopes, as in its native habitat.
