In the 1990s a group of teenagers from the Bronx had their eyes on Ralph Lauren’s Polo line. Feeling like it had not been designed for them, they wanted to make it theirs, and be empowered by embracing this cultural crossover. Most of the pieces they wore were lifted from New York’s high-end department stores, and to this day, you can still find vintage Polo pieces with evidence that it came to the original owner through some stealthy five-finger discount action. These teens came to be known as the Lo Lifes, and their style influenced hip-hop and rap artists across the US. Documentary photographer, Tom Gould, and original Lo Life, Thirstin Howl the 3rd began a project to document and catalogue this sub-culture.
