Shepherds Bullace Bullaces are very closely related to damsons, but are round instead of oval. A cultivar of the wild bullace sometimes found in hedgerows, Prunus insititia Shepherd’s Bullace is like a rounder, smaller, golden damson. A tough, reliable, thorny, disease-resistant tree with an upright habit, it’s a regular, heavy cropper. Attractive white blossom is followed by small, round, greenish-yellow fruits with a very sharp flavour, large for a bullace; leave these on the tree until a few frosts have sweetened the fruit. Shepherd’s bullace is easy to grow and a good choice for organic growers, and is ideal as part of a fruiting hedge.
