In the olden days, the herb was sometimes dried and smoked. Velvet-like large leaves form a rosette in the first year, followed by a single, upright spike full of small yellow flowers from June to August in the second year. This plant is happy in poor soil and will brighten up herbaceous borders and gravel patches, as long as it gets full sun. Can grow as high as 2.5m tall!
