Apple Greasy Pippin
The delightfully named Greasy Pippin is a useful dual-purpose apple, an Irish heritage variety once widely grown in Co. Fermanagh and also in Co Tyrone. The fruit is round, flattened and slightly uneven, pale yellow with a golden to orange blush, slight russet veining, and a remarkably waxy or ‘greasy’ skin, which helps it to resist water-loss. The flesh is creamy-white, firm and crisp, fairly juicy, sweet and well flavoured. The fruit sweetens in store, and little sugar is needed when it’s used for cooking. Apple Greasy Pippin is generally healthy and resistant to scab and canker.
This Irish Heritage Apple tree was originally saved and propagated by Irish Seed Savers in Scarriff, County Clare.
