Not a real bamboo, Nandina domestica Gulf Stream Rubra is a compact, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with pinnate leaves with lance-shaped leaflets. New growth emerges reddish-orange, turning green with age, but keeping the bronze-orange flush; it turns greener later, but keeping the bronze-orange flush; it turns red and gold in autumn and winter. Conical, white, star-shaped flowers appear in summer, sometimes followed by red berries. Heavenly bamboo was once planted at the doors of Japanese houses for use as toothpicks. Good in containers.
