Arbutus x reyorum
A hybrid form of Arbutus, not for colder, inland areas, Arbutus x reyorum is an evergreen shrub or small tree with an open habit and reddish-brown bark that peels in flakes, not strips, revealing creamy-white or greenish underbark. In the south of France it can attain a height of 12m (40’) but this is unlikely in Ireland. The stem tips are velvety and sticky. The long, shiny leaves are deep green. The quite large flowers are bell-shaped and white, flushing deep pink in late summer to autumn, and appear from February to May, saving harsh frosts. These are followed by smooth, red, strawberry-like edible fruits, which ripen the following year. It can also be grown as a hedge in coastal areas.
