Sorbus megalocarpa
A spreading tree or shrub with striking spring and autumn colour, Sorbus megalocarpa is a large, deciduous tree or shrub. Long, narrow, slightly toothed leaves emerge red, turn deep glossy green, finally turning red again in the autumn before leaf-fall. Clusters 13cm across of creamy-white, rather pungent-smelling flowers are borne in spring, and are followed by hard, brown, ovoid fruits 3cm long. Good in a wildlife or low maintenance garden. No pruning necessary.
