In 1902, Charles Louis Back purchased the current Fairview wine estate and property from its previous owner. Today, the Back family’s Fairview farm covers 320 hectares, out of which 12o hectares are under vines. The Back family has its own vineyards in the areas of Paarl, Stellenbosch, Darling and Swartland. Charles Back was very considerate towards the wine growers and farmers. As a result of this, he founded the Fair Valley Worker’s Association in 1997. Thanks to this initiative, the employees, who worked in Back’s vineyard, got a chance to own their own piece of land. The details of the Fairview vineyards are as follows: Paarl This vineyard covers an area of 350 hectares and is located on the slopes of the Paarl Mountains. The soil contains lots of decomposed granite. The proximity to the mountains keeps the climate quite cool all through the day, even during the summers.
