Summer 4 Mornings Course: Clay Serving Dishes and Platters
About the Course
Everybody loves a great serving dish to complement their food, and this course gives you the opportunity to design and hand-make your very own platter, through a series of decorating techniques workshops over four two-hour sessions.
At the first workshop you will form the piece you want to work on and each workshop thereafter will be a focus on one technique before moving on to another the following week. You can layer all techniques into one piece or work each separately picking two pieces to fire at the end of the course.
After your course you will have knowledge and ability to:
Slip decoration - Slip is a coloured or uncoloured liquified clay which can be treated like paint to decorate clay pieces. You will be taught how to use slip, opening up methods of decoration beyond traditional glazing. Slip can be used to create broad abstract textured images or flat precise detailed work. You will learn helpful brush stroke techniques that make intricate and simple designs.
Sgraffitto - You will be taught how to use the sgraffitto method of decoration, which is technically a form of slip decoration. Contrasting colours of slip are layered onto your unfired clay. Your design or pattern is then scratched or carved into the dried slip to reveal the different colours beneath.
Stamp - You will carve your own stamp from clay at this workshop, creating pattern and texture.

What does the course entail? You will be welcomed by your teacher and brought to your classroom. Each participant will have access to their own pottery tools for the duration of the workshop. You will make a few different little pots during the day, which you are welcome to bring home to airdry if you like. Please bring your own wrapping (bubble wrap, tissue paper, small carboard box, etc) if you would like to do this. Please note these pieces can be used for display only and are not watertight. You can recycle the clay in these pieces if you want to make something else or use our At Home Clay Kit if you would like to learn some handbuilding techniques.
