100 relationships, by Mareike Foecking

Quay Books
In the book 100 relationships, pictures are put into words, creating a very idiosyncratic form of poem-like texts.
In one hundred 12-line texts and 7 monochromatic images, encounters between women and men are described who meet, understand, wonder about each other or part again. [...]
As stated, the book contains 100 short English texts, each consisting of 12 lines, and reporting on short or longer encounters, misunderstandings or intense experiences. This creates images in your head that mix with your own experiences or with events that you know or think you have heard about.
The texts also play with the experience of time, because when we are experiencing intense events, thinking and speaking about them take up a lot of space, while in retrospect there are often only a few sentences to which we can reduce what we have experienced. The photographs suggest, as the texts suggest, and the empty space of the abstraction can be filled by the viewer.
