Claud Cockburn (1904 – 1981) was a British journalist and writer. In the 1930s he was a leading member of the British Communist Party and travelled to Spain to report on the Spanish Civil War at first hand.     After the Second World War, Cockburn broke his links with the Communist party and moved to Ireland, settling in Ardmore, Co Waterford. He wrote a weekly column for the Irish Times and lived the life of a writer in exile, mixing with writers, artists and intellectuals. He moved away from political journalism, writing his memoirs and several novels. Cockburn’s best-remembered work is the novel Beat the Devil which was adapted into a film starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by Cockburn’s friend John Huston.  Published by MacGibbon & Kee, London, 1961.
