Finally, the book we all need to read - Spoon-fed blows holes through everything we have been told about calorie counting, dieting and just what we should and shouldn't eat. Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology, reveals why pretty much everything we've been told about food is wrong. How things are cooked, processed and metabolised all can dramatically affect the actual calorific content of a meal. Sometimes deviating up to 200 per cent from the number stated (and these discrepancies are nearly always an underestimate). Even if the numbers on the menu were accurate, they still do not reflect the ways in which humans obtain nutrients from food. By conducted research with twins, he shows that the amount of energy each individual can extract from a given food varies dramatically. Tim also highlights how calories intake theory treats each food type as the same when it comes to calculating energy gained, although in actuality we digest food very differently depending on how it is processed and cooked - Sure it would be nonsense to count Rice cakes, Rice crispies and whole grain rice all as providing the same level of energy... right? After systematically breaking down everything we thought we knew about food, at the end of this book Tim concludes with a subsequent chapter about just 'How to Eat', and provides a one page clear 12 point plan for a healthier relationship with food. Well worth a read, this book puts the power back into our hands and shows us we can all enjoy a healthier, happier diet without gimmicks and calorie counting.  And we have a wide range of books as well here at designist.
