Tree Rhododendron Also known as burans, Rhododendron arboreum is a tall, narrow, evergreen tree with an upright, columnar habit. The deep green leaves, 8”/20cm long, have cinnamon-coloured, sometimes silvery, down (known as indumentum) on their undersides. In early spring, round trusses of unscented, bell-shaped flowers appear, red, pink or white, usually freckled in black at the throat. The tree rhododendron is hardy in average winters, but can suffer in severe frosts or very cold areas, and must have a sheltered site to prevent damage to the leaves. Good in a woodland planting.
