Chinese red-barked birch Red Panda
A superb, vigorous tree for year-round interest, Betula albosinensis Red Panda is a medium-sized to large, deciduous tree with an open conical crown. The bark is a deep coppery pinkish-crimson, peeling early to reveal a purple and grey beneath. The pointed, ovate leaves are deep green, turning butter-yellow in autumn. The dangling yellow-brown male catkins emerge with the leaves; unobtrusive female catkins appear at the same time. Chinese red-barked birch Red Panda is good for wild-life, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
