Japanese privet Texanum
A more compact cultivar of the species, with bigger, fleshier leaves, Ligustrum japonicum Texanum is a large, vigorous, fast-growing evergreen shrub with an upright habit. It is often used for hedging or informal topiary as it responds well to clipping. The oval, glossy, mid-green leaves are thicker and waxier than the species, and will show the marks of clipping, so clip in May, after which the damaged leaves will quickly be concealed by fresh growth. Scented white flowers appear in spring; these are followed by dull, black berries, liked by birds. Also known as waxleaf privet Texanum, it is a better behaved plant than the species. Be aware that some people are allergic to privet pollen.
