Willow Erythroflexuosa
A hybrid of white willow and the twisted weeping willow, Salix x sepulcralis Erythroflexuosa is a small, fairly fast-growing, deciduous tree, sometimes a large shrub, with a semi-weeping habit. The pendulous, twisting branches are orange-yellow when young, maturing to deep brown. The narrow, pale green leaves are also twisted; slightly downy when they first emerge, they have slightly toothed edges and paler undersides. Yellow catkins appear in spring. Willow Erythroflexuosa looks particularly lovely next to water, and its contorted branches give it an architectural quality which shines in modern plantings, particularly in winter. It can be left unpruned, or pruned back hard for more colourful juvenile stems. Willow Erythroflexuosa holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
