Jounama Snow Gum
Well adapted to harsh winter conditions, although it can suffer frost damage when young, Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. debeuzevillei is a large, evergreen tree with a rounded crown and attractive, open habit; it grows slowly at first, before growing away more vigorously. The bark is pale grey to pure white with patches of rusty red, cream and olive green, and peels attractively in long strips from the branches and trunk. Emerging shoots and leaves are coppery with a white bloom. The highly aromatic, blue-green, leathery juvenile foliage is very large and almost oblong in shape, becoming lance-shaped and olive green as the tree ages. The white flowers are attractive to bees. Jounama snow gum holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It can be used for a shelter belt, and like many eucalypts, will regenerate from the base if cut back by frost.
