Maurice Sendak is the author/illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are, one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children's books of all time. In 1962, just a year before Where the Wild Things Are was published, Maurice Sendak illustrated a book for children by the Limerick connected poet, Robert Graves. This book, The Big Green Book, is about a little boy named Jack who discovers a big green book of magic in the attic and learns all sorts of spells. Jack makes the most of his new magic powers, and his poor old aunt and uncle are quite bewildered. Robert Graves is the grandson of Charles Graves who was Anglican Bishop of Limerick for 33 years until his death in 1899. Bishop Charles Graves was a friend of the poets William Wordsworth and Matthew Arnold and of the composer Mendelssohn. Robert Graves is considered one of the most brilliant lyric poets of the 20th century. This is a book, then,  illustrated by the most honoured children’s book artist in history and written by a Limerick-connected poet about whom it has been said "that without him the story of modern poetry itself is incomplete."
