Of Their Own Choice is a World War II memoir written by Peter Churchill, (1909 – 1972). It describes his training as a British spy and his first mission in France as a Special Operations Executive (SOE) officer. SOE training began at Warnborough Manor where he learned sabotage, Morse code, bridge demolition, and French military drill, and continued in the Scottish Highlands for practical training in map reading, orienteering, weapons and explosives training. At Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest, Churchill was taught railway sabotage, inconspicuous behaviour, codes, cover stories and how to behave under interrogation. Of the fourteen people who began the training, he was one of only three who graduated. For Churchill’s first mission he was infiltrated into the French Riviera by submarine in order to inspect three SOE networks in Antibes, Marseille and Lyons, give them instructions and to provide them with funds.
