The Literature of England is an introduction to the major texts of English Literature, jointly written by William J. Entwistle and Eric Gillett.
William James Entwistle, (1895 – 1952) was a British scholar of Romance languages and literatures, with a focus on Spanish. He contributes the first 2 sections of the book.
‘The Making of English’ looks at Anglo Saxon and early English writings, ending with Chaucer and his contemporaries. ‘The English Classics’ covers the best-known works from Shakespeare and Spencer up to the Victorians and the ‘Golden Age of the Novel’.
Eric Walkey Gillett (1893-1978) was an editor, publisher, writer and BBC broadcaster. Gillett wrote the second section, with a survey of each field of the arts - poetry, drama etc - from about the 1890’s up to the time of writing.
Published by Longmans, Green and Co in 1948. 2nd edition.
Dust jacket is frayed at edges. Otherwise, the book is in good condition with binding intact.
