The Lady with the Camelias is a semi-autobiographical novel, written when Dumas was 23 years old. It is a tragic love story based on the author's brief love affair with a courtesan, Marie Duplessis. First published in 1848, it is more usually known in English simply as Camille. The story formed the basis for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata. Alexandre Dumas ‘fils’ (1824–1895) was the son of Alexandre Dumas ‘père’ (1802 – 1870) the author of swash-buckling historical adventures like The Three Musketeers.
