The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor. ‘Ingoldsby’ was actually the pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham (1788 – 1845). The stories were inspired by real legends and old mythology, chiefly Kentish, but they often take the form of humorous parodies and pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. The poems and stories are illustrated by artists including John Leech and George Cruikshank. The Ingoldsby Legends were first printed during 1837 as a regular series in the magazine ‘Bentley's Miscellany’. Published by Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, London in 1910.
