Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, Guillermo Kuitca is best known for his paintings of geographical maps and architectural plans, exploring themes of travel, loss, memory and migration. According to Kuitca, he uses the image of a map “to get lost… not to get oriented.” Produced to accompany an exhibition in New York in 2010, this set includes two books: Le Sacre (1992) was an installation comprised of maps painted onto 54 mattresses, all vertically installed in the gallery's 12 x 20-foot Moving Room. On each bed Kuitca had painted geographic maps of randomly selected locations from around the world, punctuated by irregularly placed buttons that served as markers for cities. Paintings 2008-2010 features Kuitca’s pictorial explorations of light and shadow, colour and construction. Works such as Untitled (2009) and Philosophy for Princes I (2009) "emerged from an anonymous way of accessing modernism” and incorporate fragmented maps, architectural floor plans, and thorns.     Published by Sperone Westwater, New York in 2010.
