Alison Plowden (1931 – 2007) was a British historian and biographer who wrote over twenty-five books on the Tudor and Stuart periods. Danger to Elizabeth focuses on the real and perceived threat to Elizabeth I from English Catholics. When she assumed the throne in 1558, Elizabeth hoped to steer a middle way between the hard-line Protestantism of her brother Edward and the fanatical Catholicism of Bloody Mary, but this proved almost impossible. Faced with a Papal bull from Pope Pius V in 1570, which was tantamount to a declaration of war, and with the plots centred on her cousin Mary Queen of Scots, she was driven to regard her Catholic subjects as ‘the enemy within’. Lively and easy to read, Plowden’s book brings to life this fascinating and turbulent period of English history.   Published by Book Club Associates in 1974. Good condition.
