“Killarney’s glory burst upon my view, Her mountains gilded with a hovering ray” – Richard Chester
Rev. Richard Chester (died 1883) and Rev. William Bennett Chester (1820 – 1893) were brothers, born in Mallow, County Cork. William Bennett was the better known of the two, and served as Bishop of Killaloe and Clonfert from 1884.
Richard’s poems in this collection cover a variety of topics, including a couple on slavery. Many of William’s verses are on religious themes, such as ‘The Martyrdom of Stephen’: ‘“He fell asleep!” – Oh! Say what wondrous power, Upheld that noble martyr, in the hour’.
Published by Hodges and Smith, 1849.
