Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910), the son of a Norwegian pastor, is considered one the greats of Norwegian literature alongside Henrik Ibsen. In 1903 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry; he also wrote the lyrics for the Norwegian National Anthem. Published in 1884, The Heritage Of The Kurts is Bjørnson’s final novel. The theme is heredity, and whether it is within our power to escape from our family background. It also looks at the evils of double standards in morals. The protagonist is an idealistic, enthusiastic schoolmaster, who tries to bring modern teaching methods to a small Norwegian seaport town. Looking back five or six generations, Bjørnson examines the schoolmaster’s vigorous, and at times violent, inheritance and explores how it shaped him, and whether he can break free from the past. Published by Heinemann in 1892. Good condition. Slightly faded pink cloth cover. Binding intact Inscription on front endpaper.
